The two brains below are from two 57 year old deceased men. The brain on the left was from a man who drank 625 gallons of alcohol in his lifetime.  The brain on the right was from a man who consumed 20 gallons in his lifetime.

The damaged brain on the left is shriveled with obvious loss of mass. The person must have had mental impairment as a result of the alcohol damaged brain.

 

The brain on the right was not exposed to excessive amounts of alcohol. It's not shriveled up. It has body and appears healthy.

Alcoholism is a Brain Disorder

 

 

Yes, alcohol dependence (alcoholism) is a disease. Alcohol dependence alters parts of the brain from its normal healthy state, this is called disease.1 There now exists undisputable evidence provided by brain imagery scans that show differences in the brains of people dependent on alcohol vs. people who are not.  (reference)
